What is last in first out stock control (LIFO)?

The last in first out inventory method, otherwise known as the LIFO method, ensures that the most recently added stock is picked, used or sold first. It sits in contrast with the first in first out (FIFO) method, where the oldest stock is sold first.

The LIFO method can help to enhance the flow of inventory through your warehouse, can maximise capacity, and can reduce costs in certain tax and accounting scenarios. Examples of LIFO storage systems include:

  • Double deep racking: Double deep pallet racking is a LIFO inventory management system that can boost your storage space by up to 50% by doubling the depth of your pallet racks.
  • Drive-in pallet racking: The ultimate space-saving solution, drive-in pallet racking allows forklifts to drive into the rack, and allows you to store pallets up to 10 deep.
  • Push-back racking: This gravity fed system sees a queue of pallets placed on gliding shuttles or rollers, allowing them to be stored and retrieved from the front.
